Welcome

Finally, with Spring approaching it’s time to report on what is new or happening with the Board of Directors for Saint Kevin Catholic Academy. We intended to have more than one article in the Directors’ Corner but sometimes good ideas get lost in the shuffle of everyday business. Therefore, let’s not waste time in getting this article finished and published.

Brother Kevin F. Smith, OSF, Ph.D. tended his resignation from the Board and it was accepted with great regret. Brother Kevin (St. Kevin School, Class of 1955) was and remains very supportive of our efforts to continue to build our Academy into a exceptional education institution for the Auburndale and larger community.

This resignation encouraged us to expand the Board so that we would always have a sufficient number of members available for meetings, committee co-chairs and decision making. After reviewing the candidates with the Pastor and Administrator the Membership Committee approached five outstanding community members to ask if they would be willing to serve and all accepted. They have all completed Virtus training and attended a new Directors orientation from the Diocese. They were certified by the Superintendents’ Office and joined the full Board at the February meeting.

In alphabetic order the first new Director is Anita Alfaro the parent of two graduates of St. Kevin School and has been a member of the Parish for 38 years. She is a founding member of the Care and Share Program where she supervised the Junior High School group and mentored high school students who assisted in the program. She is very active in the Rosary Society and the Prayer Group and periodically performed as a substitute teacher at St. Kevin School. Anita is a successful small businesswomen who for 43 years has been the owner/operator of a Beauty Salon with many clients from St. Kevin. She is fluent in both Spanish and English and understands and speaks Italian.

Our second Director is Andes (Andy) Colon who has been a Parishioner for over 50 years. He has three children who all graduated from St. Kevin’s School. Andy is retired from the retail Pharmacy field where he started as a delivery boy and ended up owning the business. He presently is a school bus Driver with a company in Nassau County. He has been very active in the Knights of Columbus which he joined in 1977 and he has held many offices and titles, the latest being Secretary to the Queens County Conference. The Knight of Columbus work tirelessly year round to support various charities and Catholic organizations.

The third new Director is Edward Fitzgerald who is a long time Parishioner and Alumni Parent of St. Kevin School. Ed is a retired Engineer with a Bachelor of Science from Manhattan College and a Master of Science from Polytechnic University in electrical engineering. After his many years of work and professional accomplishments including holding a Patent for an Ultrasound Scan Converter design Ed has volunteered as an Adult Supervisor with the St. Kevin Care and Share Program and more recently has mentored with 10 different rookie high school robotics teams for the past five years. Three years ago one of his teams advanced to the national tournament in St. Louis, MO. so we hope to enlist him with our future STEM efforts.

Number four Director, Andy Kotowicz is well known to the St. Kevin family. He is a graduate of St. Kevin School (Class of 1963). Andy went to Bishop Reilly High School and later received a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University. After college Andy spent many years in the construction industry in the greater New York area as a Field Engineer/Surveyor at numerous sites until his retirement in 2014. Andy is well loved and respected by many in the Parish for his over 18 years as the Coordinator of volunteers and services for church run homeless shelter program. He worked closely with The Partnership for the Homeless advocacy group and the St. Kevin program was open to eight men, five nights a week during the winter months till it was shut down by the City of New York Andy has been an Athletic Director/Coach of St. Kevin Youth Guild CYO boys and girls track team since 1988 and since 1997 the CYO Diocese of Brooklyn Coordinator of the Track and Field Program for 22 Parishes and over 1,000 children. Andy was the well deserving recipient of the Diocese of Brooklyn Sesquicentennial Medal.

New Director number five, Maria F. Nicolosi is also a long time Parishioner and St. Kevin School Alumni parent. She has devoted many volunteer hours while her children were attending our school where she worked tirelessly with the Home School Association especially the Lunch Program and the “300 Club”, a major fund raiser for the school. Maria has an extensive background in the financial services industry. She holds an Associate in Business Management from Queensborough Community College (Class of 1984) and has attended Supervisory and Diversity workshops offered in the banking field. She has served in many positions and is presently the Branch designated Supervisor/Operations Supervisor for the Astoria Bank on Francis Lewis Blvd. With her many responsibilities with work and family we are very blessed to have Maria be willing to take on more activities at our Academy.

This is certainly true for all our new and continuing Directors. Their willingness to volunteer time and talent in addition to their other obligations is greatly appreciated. Our St. Kevin Catholic Academy is very blessed to have these wonderful caring members on the Board of Directors.

Hugh M. McGowan, Ph.D.
